Diving In Europe - MS ZENOBIA WRECK, CYPRUS

MS Zenobia is, or was, a large RO-RO ferry that sank only one after her maiden voyage. She is currently near Larnaca, Cyprus and has been for more than thirty years.

AMPELI And RUGBY

I want to make a brief mention of one of my favourite places in Pissouri, Ampeli Restaurant.  Located in the Ampelohori villa complex and Pelekanos Apartments (in case anyone needs a place to stay) perched on the side of the escarpment, and capably run by the ever cheerful Dimitri, this is one of Pissouri’s hidden treasures.

MEETING CYPRUS

My first experience of Cyprus was at the end of September 2013. This was a vacation away from the cold of Alaska, to feel the hot sun, swim in the sea, and take mini adventures with David.

THE SANCTUARY OF APOLLO HYLATES

One of our many favorite archeological sites to visit is the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, which is located about 2,5 kilometers west of the ancient town of Kourion along the B6 (the old Limassol/Pafos road).

About Pissouri

Pissouri is the third largest village district in the Limassol District of Cyprus, and is located off the A6 motorway midway between Limassol and Paphos (34 kilometers to each) in the Southwest of Cyprus. Pissouri receives about 450mm of rain annually, but has a good supply of groundwater in the valley, with agriculture and tourism as the two main commercial interests.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

Another of David and my passions is gardening. You may ask, “how does your garden grow?” in Cyprus, what with the cold and high rainfall in the winter, then to total contrast of the windy and dry Spring, the suffocating humidity of Summer, and crisp warm early Fall.

OUR FIRST SPRING TOGETHER IN CYPRUS

Cyprus spring offered up the most amazing array of surprises in the normally arid countryside. Sunshine, color, fragrances, and flowers were bountiful.  From trees bursting with blossoms to the tiniest of flowers no larger than a peppercorn, the beauty we witnessed was astounding.

TIMIOS STAVROS, ANOGYRA

A fascinating trip into the past is a visit to the ruins of the Timios Stavros Monastery just on the outskirts of the village of Anogyra in Limassol District.  Anogyra has so much to see in the village itself, the Carob Museum, and Olive Oil Museum, but more on those in later blogs.

THE PROMISING PARTNERSHIP!

We have just been through a storm front that has stayed with us for two days, bringing much-needed freshness to the dry, dusty hills.  Sadly, probably one of the last ones before autumn.  The valleys in the mornings have been filled with the cool mists of early summer, and it seems they have brought with them one of our favorite migratory birds, The European Bee-eater (merops apiaster).

TURTLE WATCH

The time of year is upon us when we dream of all things turtle!  We were fortunate enough around this time last year to be involved in a very minor way with the ‘Turtle Watch’.  It left a lasting impression on us.

TURTLES 2: THE SEQUEL

Ahh! Friday morning. Up as the last bats flit their way to roost, and the early birds begin to stir and twitter in the brush on the hillside. Mist lies lazily in the valley, waiting for the sun to lift it up to the limitless blue skies.

OLD PARAMALI

We wake in the wee hours of the morning, as the early light begins to tinge the mists hanging in the valley below.  The day creatures are beginning to stir, but all is very quiet and calm.

CHURCHES & CHAPELS OF PISSOURI

Pissouri is blessed with a central main church of exquisite beauty dominating the village from its perch overlooking the village square. To sit outside on a cool Sunday morning listening to the chants and singing while looking east to the sunrise over Akrotiri Peninsular is one of the most spiritually peaceful experiences of Pissouri.

THE THORNY SIDE OF DELICIOUS…

The harvest period runs from May until August, depending on the part of the plant to be used, where back-breaking work in the prickly heat and humidity and a detailed preparation gives a return of a wonderful flavour throughout the year.
