Athletic Club Omonia Nicosia, often shortened to AC Omonia, was first established in June 1948. Since entering the Cyprus Football Association in 1953, the club have emerged as one of the country's most successful sides, winning a vast number of domestic honours. In terms of total domestic trophies, they trail only behind APOEL, who were founded more than 25 years earlier than Omonia. APOEL also serve as the club's main rivals, alongside the other major club from the city, Olympiakos Nicosia.

After winning league titles in 1961 and 1966, as well as the Cypriot Cup in 1965, the club experienced its first prolonged period of success during the 1970s. Over the course of this decade, Omonia were crowned as league champions in 1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979, and won the Cypriot Cup in both 1972 and 1974, marking the club's first two domestic doubles.

In total, Omonia have been crowned as Cypriot champions on 20 occasions, with their most recent success coming in 2010. The team have won the Cypriot Cup 14 times and completed additional domestic league and cup doubles in 1981, 1982 and 1983. At present, they are the only team in the country to have won the Cypriot Cup four times in a row. Off the back of their huge levels of success, the Football Association named them the Team of the 20th Century. However, despite their impressive domestic performances, they are yet to reach the group stage of either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League.

Prolific goalscorer, Sotiris Kaiafas, is widely regarded as the club's greatest ever player and he was named the Best Cypriot Footballer of the 20th Century in 2003. Other notable former players include Costas Malekkos, Rainer Rauffmann and Michalis Konstantinou.

Omonia's home matches are played at the GSP Stadium, which first opened in 1999. It is shared with both APOEL and Olympiakos Nicosia and can hold up to 22,859 supporters.
